Spark Summit East 2017 in Boston, MA
Even though Boston was hit by a snow storm, thousands of attendees still made it to the conference venue. The main topic of this event were upcoming improvements in Spark 2.1, many Deep Learning frameworks for Spark, and the upcoming priorities in UC Berkeley’s RiseLab, the successor to AMPLab.
The opening keynote talks again included a great presentation by Dr. Matei Zaharia (now at Stanford University, see picture below).

In sum, it was a great Spark Summit East with many inspiring talks.
The keynote talks ended with some use cases from companies such as Salesforce.com,
It was also interesting to see that the field of genomics is also embracing the Apache Spark project. The enormous volumes of data (see picture below) helped to convince them to move to this efficient big data environment.
Finally, Dr. Ion Stoica (UC Berkeley) talked about his vision on the future of Spark.
Next to the keynote talks, there were many breakout sessions. Below, you see picture of another interesting one on the topic of Clipper.
Another interesting development was Intel’s commitment to BigDL, a Deep Learning package for Spark.
Next morning, Intel also delivered a keynote talk about their BigDL project.
