INFORMS 2016 Annual Meeting in Nashville, TN
6,000 academics and business people gathered in Nashville, TN for the biggest analytics and OR event of the year with 80+ concurrent sessions: The INFORMS Annual Meeting. Central themes at this event included: Stochastic Optimization, Analytics, Data Mining, Social Media (24 Sessions with 100+ talks), Big Data, prescriptive analytics, ... . These topics are directly in line with our analytics programs: MScMA and Business Engineering/Data Analytics. Ghent University was well-represented at the event.

Finally, Dr. Michel Ballings (University of Tennessee at Knoxville) gave a talk titled “Evaluating Prediction Models For Targeting Product Reviewers” (co-authors: Rachel Van Deventer, Ryan Erwin, Miller Moore, Dirk Van den Poel).
The Social Media Session started with Steven Hoornaert’s talk (see picture below) titled “Identifying New Product Ideas: Waiting For The Wisdom Of The Crowd Or Screening Them In Real-time” (co-authors: Michel Ballings, Edward C. Malthouse, and Dirk Van den Poel).
Next, Matthias Bogaert (see picture below) presented his research “Evaluating The Importance Of Different Communication Types In Tie Strength Prediction On Social Media” (co-authors: Michel Ballings, Dirk Van den Poel).
