Next, Prof. Dr. Erik Duval (@ErikDuval, Chair of the research unit on human-computer interaction at the computer science department of KULeuven, see picture below) took the stage with his presentation “Information Visualisation for Big Data”. Information visualisation enables humans to make sense of the abundance of diverse data. This is important if we want address some of the real dangers with Big Data, and is inspired by an approach to 'augment the human intellect' (rather than replacing it!) that goes back to the ground breaking work of Doug Engelbart ... in the 1960's!

He gave many examples such as the one on the right:

Next, Dr. Bart Adams (Software Engineering Manager at Luciad) presented his talk emphasizing the usage of the available geospatial data. The key to situational awareness is to be able to connect all the data sources, visualize them efficiently and accurately, and provide analysis to allow users to decide and act. The sheer amount of sensors and data, has pushed Luciad to continuously innovate to deal with these big data challenges.

Next, ir. Paul Poelmans (@SogetiBelux, Transformation Officer at Sogeti BeLux, see picture to the right) presented two projects in the realm of big data. First, he talked about our joint CALM project (Customer Analytics and Logistics Management, see picture below).

Second, Sogeti, in the framework of an Innoviris Research project, and in collaboration with Université Libre de Bruxelles, Ghent University and Sirris, launched a project designed to capitalize on unstructured data to gain more control in the area of cyber security.

Finally, Toon Vanagt (@toon, serial internet entrepreneur, founder of data.be, see picture on top of the page) took the stage. In his inspiring talk he gave many examples of how big data is disrupting existing business models.
