Big Data Event in Paris organized by Business & Decision
On Oct. 8, 2014 yours truly (@dirkvandenpoel) was invited to attend a Big Data event (#MatinaleBD) organized by Business & Decision in Paris, France. Business & Decision is a 2,500 employee company operating in 15 countries. Even though it was mostly vendor presentations they ensured that a lot of case studies were included to make it interesting. The day started with a welcome by the CEO of Business & Decision, France (@BD_Group, see picture below). He set the stage for a nice panel, which was moderated by Yann Gourvennec (@ygourven). You can read more about it at B&D’s blog (in French). They also published a white paper (in French) on the topic. My particular choice during concurrent sessions made me miss interesting talks by @talend, @informaticafr, @MicrostrategyFr, Unfortunately, that’s inevitable with parallel sessions.

Finally, it was time to head back home. Thanks Marieke Crabbe (@MariekeCrabbe) for the great conversations, and Dr. Patrick Glenisson for great conversations too as well as for being a great host.
Usually, I am quite skeptical of panel discussions, but this one was a notable exception. E.g. PSG talked about their connected car project.
During the panel, several polls were held. Below, you see the result of one of them.
Next up was the coffee break. Business & Decision picked a very nice venue for this event.
Next, I attended a great IBM talk by Jacques Milman (@milmanj, @IBMBigDataFr, see picture below). He provided a detailed discussion of nice use #BigData use cases (see slide below - in French). I also liked his example of a pharmaceutical company predicting stockouts of competitor products.
Next, I attended the Oracle talk (@Oracle_France, see picture below). They proudly talked about the Oracle Airbus Big Data project to analyze A320neo in-flight data. Moreover, they gave a nice example of analyzing the usage of school iPads, and relating that to pupil/student performance.
Next, I attended the talk by Cloudera.
Next up was a nice reception with great food.
